Inspired by Leonard Cohen’s intriguing poem of unfinished sentences, When Even The is a magically meditative solo performance created and performed by Canadian artist Clara Furey which explores the field of energy between her vibrating body and an inanimate presence.

Originally, this 90-minute work was commissioned to be part of A Crack In Everything, an exhibit curated by the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art which paid tribute to Cohen’s legacy in poetry, song and music. From November 2017 to April 2018, Clara Furey performed the solo 90 times, as she questioned the existential void in a ritual dance which examined the porosity between life and death beside one of Marc Quinn’s imposing lead sculptures, the aptly named Coaxial Plank Density.

For ImPulsTanz, she has chosen to pursue this exploration of different meditative and vibratory states by performing with Fundstück, an Heimrad Bäcker’s sculpture, from Mumok’s permanent collection.

When Even The is centred on a specific sculpture (or other visual art form) at the location where it is performed and will resonate differently depending on the places, spaces, contexts and works with which the choreographer interacts.

Halfway between poetry and choreography, Clara Furey wishes to open a dialogue between movement, visual arts and sound. Designed to be performed in the context of an art exhibit that can be visited at one’s own pace, When Even The fosters an intimate atmosphere, and Clara Furey’s minimalist performance invites us to take a contemplative posture. The void becomes a conveyor of possibilities and allows all forms of communication to coexist.

Clara Furey explores the sensuality of the dead and the living, the memory of touch, as well as absence through sensory and sensitive choreography. In the process, she places a mirror before our perishable bodies, offering us different perceptions and incarnations of decomposition. A myriad of identities pass through her, visit her, inhabit her, achieving a state which oscillates between tension and appeasement.
