Rave (2001-2026) by Karole Armitage
Karole Armitage’s Rave was premiered in 2001 in Nancy for the Ballet de Lorraine. The American choreographer returns to the company twenty-five years later with a new generation of dancers. Rave is a festive performance blending various dance styles and featuring iconic figures such as Marilyn Monroe.
The piece is a celebration of life, a blend of 21st-century balls, ballets, and carnivals. Using classical technique, Rave responds to the need to push energy and speed to the extreme. By electrifying the body with music turned up to full volume and emphasizing virtuosity, the piece unleashes a raw, explosive energy. Extreme in the tension it creates between unbridled dance, speed, virtuosity, maximum energy, and the visual environment, Karole Armitage reimagines ballet with today’s dancers from the Ballet de Lorraine.
