Turning Burning by Jan Martens (2016, re-creation 2025)

TURNING BURNING was created in 2016 for the Unknown Pleasures evening, a program conceived by the previous directors of the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine, Petter Jacobsson and Thomas Caley. Five choreographers were invited to create a short piece without naming it, so that the audience remained unaware of their identities.
This anonymity gave Jan Martens the freedom and space to create a piece for a ballet for the first time; but also the opportunity to give free rein to his passion for the motif of repetition and minimalism on a large-scale scale, while intoxicatingly connecting this work to certain emblematic figures of the postmodern and minimalist movements, such as Lucinda Childs and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.
Following his exploration of jumping in his performance THE DOG DAYS ARE OVER (2014), he here focuses on rotation, a gesture closely linked to ballet.
