IDORU illuminates the phenomenon of the creation and worship of idols – think of Idols or So You Think You Can Dance. As in a reality show, six dancers compete with one another, and the public chooses the winner. On request, the performers reveal their (trade) secrets in a private performance – from free running to Chinese pole – until they are voted out. Although the game might appear real in the beginning, this presentation of the human body as a commodity starts to be slowly questioned. Who is manipulating whom, and how far are we going with this?

With this form of publicly criticized but massively consumed entertainment, Gingras purposely ventures onto slippery ice. He puts the performers in a position of vulnerability, defies the established boundaries between dance and entertainment and appeals to the morality of the viewing public: do you find it acceptable that we reduce an individual to a commercial product?
